Maritime Risk Webcast
Maritime Risk Webcast
Maritime stakeholders face complex day-to-day challenges. Maintaining a healthy bottom line in the face of a myriad of regulatory, environmental, and operational risks has become "Job #1". Preventing the loss of vessel and crew from acts of piracy, catastrophic accidents, natural disasters, or the loss of infrastructure resulting in down time -- which hinders or suspends essential activities -- are just some of the tasks confronting today's maritime professional. In this interactive webcast, Donald McKay (American Public University) and Joseph Keefe (Maritime Professional Magazine) promoted discussion, heightened awareness, and presented solutions to these challenges faced by logisticians. Some of the topics of discussion included: -Standards of Training and Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Compliance -Cost-Effective education of the entire maritime workforce -Utilizing technology to more effectively deliver content -Optimizing operational efficiency while minimizing vulnerability Following the presentation, there was a question and answer session with the speakers. Women Of The Maritime - 2010 Jack Tar Magazine Calendar
Women Of The Maritime - 2010 Jack Tar Magazine Calendar
The calendar is a financial boost to the Jack Tar Magazine mission; We strengthen community among sailors through interactive, informative, and entertaining media, with a focus on the progressive side of modern maritime culture and it's roots in traditional seamanship. The printing of the calendar was made possible thanks to great support we have received to our Kickstarter project. (bit.ly There are huge gaps in how information is being shared between the maritime subcultures today. Heavy industrial offshore and Lakes operations have trade magazines that focus on new technology or environmental legislation affecting their industry. Commercial fishermen, research vessel crew, tour operators and sail training crew have few, if any, forums where they share information. Wooden boat builders, cruisers, and racers have magazines and online forums that include technical articles and product information, but scarce offerings when it comes to well written sea stories, interesting art and photography, and thoughtful reflections about life on the water today. This is where Jack Tar picks up the slack; our audience includes everyone who recognizes the great, and sometimes not-so-great aspects of the seafaring life. We educate new mariners on how to succeed in the maritime industry, while promoting the study of traditional seamanship skills. We provide venues to discuss important issues: whether it's about safety at sea, USCG compliance topics, relationships between operators and ...

Maritime Matinees 2010
Meet the director, filmmaker, photographer and/or actor and hear the inside scoop on how the maritime story was created: the challenges, the mistakes, and the balance between truth and fiction. This is a rare opportunity to see a program related to the sea, and meet the people instrumental in making it all happen. March 6: The Marine Photography of Benjamin Mendlowitz Benjamin Mendlowitz has traveled the globe for more than 25 years to photograph wooden boats. He is well-known throughout the boating world for his contributions to nautical publications and for his award-winning annual Calendar of Wooden Boats®. Seven books of his photography have been published to date. Mendlowitz grew up in New York City, and his passion for wooden boats began during the summers of his youth at the New Jersey shore, where he visited and was influenced by the local traditional boat builders. After graduating from Brandeis University and after a one year of farm work and photography in Florence, Italy, he began his photographic career. In his travels, he met Jon Wilson, founder of WoodenBoat magazine, and his photographs soon began to appear in that publication. In 1983, Mendlowitz formed his company, NOAH Publications, and published his first Calendar of Wooden Boats®. The focus of Benjamin's work is to capture the beauty, romance and fine craftsmanship of a classic wooden boat. His photography is dedicated to the continued preservation of these craft.
